Your Own Ko'olau Custom Build-
Choose your woods, add the extra features you would like, and order your own custom Hawaiian Ukulele!
These are hand built by Noa Bonk using the finest woods, only Hide Glue, and a vintage style satin nitrocellulose finish. Ko’olau consistently makes an excellent sounding ukulele. If you are craving some serious tone from a tenor, this may be just what you need~
Design Your Own Custom Ko'olau!
From cutting the wood to stringing it up, Noa Bonk with Ko'olau Ukulele consistently handbuilds amazing tenors. This is a look at various customer CS models. The CS has a slightly larger lower bout and more rounded body curves compared to the Deluxe and T100. It differs slightly in headstock taper and bracing as well. The CS comes stock with only premium woods of your choice and a beautiful semi-gloss nitro-cullulose finish. If you really want to show off these world class woods, you can upgrade to the most perfect gloss finish.
With the options here you can put together your own custom with everything just how you want! You will choose your body woods, the binding, purfling, bridge, headstock, and finish among other options and upgrades. This will most likely be fun for some but may be option overload for others. That is why we make some options necessary to choose from and most not necessary. If you want Ko'olau to choose, just don't select the optional choices and Noa will make the selection for you.
As far as which woods to choose, John from Ko'olau writes, "We are often asked 'what's best?'.... it's not a 'what's best' decision, but instead, what sound is preferred. Most players, especially after becoming serious about guitar, ukulele, or any stringed instrument end up owning several instruments with a variety of combinations of woods."
Below are some recent examples from Ko'olau. Remember, these video sound samples here are recorded for true reference and have no alteration or enhancement. Use quality playback and hear the differences.
(Pictures 1-12) Spruce Top - Koa Sides & Back - Madagascar Rosewood Fretboard Bridge, & Faceplate& Binding - Waverly Tuning Keys with Snakewood button- Matching Snakewood Bridge Pins.
(Pics 13-24) Honduran Mahogany Body - Gloss finish - Madagascar Rosewood fretboard, pin bridge, and faceplate - Bone bridge pins - Slotted Headstock - Gotoh Stealth Tuners.
Any combinations of these woods and options will sound and look incredible.
What you get with a Ko'olau ukulele is a lifetime musical companion made by one master luthier and finished by another. Noa and Ryan are both so precise, talented, and experienced. You will only see extremely clean construction and the most phenomenal woods. They're perfectionists to the max. They're not affordable for some, but if you can, they deliver in the quality and tone many of us drool over.
The next example has a Redwood top with Milo sides and back and koa binding. I love this combination!

Current Turnaround Time: Amount of time it takes before shipment-
Full Setup: 10-14 Days
Basic Quality Control: 2-3 Days
BASIC QUALITY CONTROL covers inspecting the instrument for any major defects that would have been missed by the factory and any faults in construction that could potentially damage or limit the functionality of the instrument over time. Any defective instruments are rejected and replaced. We make sure that each Ukulele meets the basic standard for a brand new instrument and will be ready to play once you receive it. A final cleanup is also included after inspection before packing and shipment.
Full Setup - FREE for all Ukuleles $399 and over / $20.00 for Ukuleles from $300-399 / $30.00 for Ukuleles Under $300
-Overall QC evaluation: To find defects in construction as well as to get an overall view of the instrument and note the areas that need extra attention and adjustment during the setup.
-Saddle Adjustment: The height of the saddle is lowered to reduce the distance between the strings and the fretboard, making it easier to play than the factory setup, especially higher up the fretboard.
-Nut Slot Adjustment: The depth, width, and angle of the nut slots are adjusted to create a more comfortable playing experience especially on the lower frets.
-Fret Dressing: After adjusting the nut and saddle heights, high spots in the fretboard or uneven frets will potentially cause fret buzz, dead spots, or other unwanted problems. The frets are filed to create a more consistent level across the fretboard. We then crown the frets to return their rounded curvature back to the top of each fret creating a clear contact point for each string. We then smooth and polish the frets and condition the fingerboard to bring them back to new condition.
-Final Cleanup: We always do a final overall cleanup of the instrument to make sure it is in new condition and ready to play before it is prepared for shipment.
Rush Setup & Delivery - Additional $50.00

One of our setup technicians will work overtime outside of normal business hours to complete the setup within 2-3 days of the order being placed and immediately hand it over to the shipping department for packing and shipment. The $50.00 rush charge is in addition to the cost of the full setup.
